Salamander Migration - 109-1-1035

Have you ever experienced the strange and slow stampede of salamanders as they travel to the safety of vernal pools each spring? Head out on the trails with us to explore this special springtime phenomenon. Along the way, we'll discover what a vernal pool is and why salamanders seek out these unique wetland habitats. We'll also learn more about their life cycles and the critical role of vernal pools in the landscape. Note: this program is extremely weather-dependent as salamanders need spring rain and warming temperatures to trigger their migration. We may need to change the date, time, and/or location of the hike if the weather doesn't cooperate and will contact each registered participant if changes need to be made for a successful program!

What to Expect:
This program takes place entirely outdoors. The time, approximately 120 minutes, will be spent on a leisurely walk with frequent stops. Expect to walk from 1/2 mile to 1.5 miles. The planned walk surface is gravel and there may be some off-trail exploration. For maximum enjoyment, some of our program time will require all participants to patiently remain still, quiet, and listen closely.
