Overview:Join us for a guided exploration of the unique habitats and seasonal nature happenings at Stony Creek Metropark. Each month we’ll meet at the nature center, learn about the season and what we might see or hear in the woods, fields, and ponds; and then head out on a hike to discover the wildlife and plants that call Stony Creek Metropark home. Hikes take place primarily on compact gravel trails near the Nature Center and will be between 1-2 miles in length. Some trail sections are steep and uneven. January 15 - Nature Discovery Hike: Winter Tree ID, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Learn how to identify trees without their leaves. We’ll examine bark and take a closer look at twigs to discover the characteristics that will help us determine what tree it is. February 19 – Nature Discovery Hike: Animal Tracks ‘n’ Signs, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Learn how to identify animals by the different ways they move, the shapes their feet leave behind, their scat, and other the clues they may leave behind. March 19 – Nature Discovery Hike: Woodcock Walk, 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.Learn about and search for the elusive Woodcock. A seldom seen and peculiar bird, the male Woodcock puts on an amazing courtship dance for the lucky ladies. Please wear waterproof boots and bring a flashlight. April 16 – Nature Discovery Hike: Vernal Pools, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Come and explore this secret world that is home to animals like fairy shrimp, frogs, salamanders, and a host of macroinvertebrates. May 21 – Nature Discovery Hike: Butterflies, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Discover the butterflies that are flittering about in Stony Creek Metropark. We’ll examine their lives to learn why they are important and observe their sizes, colors, shapes, and behaviors to identify them.June 18 – Nature Discovery Hike: Birds of Spring, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Enjoy a walk on the nature trials as we search for birds. We’ll use binoculars to observe their behaviors and see what they are up to. The nature center has a small, limited supply of binoculars. Ages: Fun for all ages! Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
